How Far Should News Organizations Go In Their Commentary?

Olbermann - was pulling him smart?

The Fox News Channel is viewed by many on the left as not being fair and balanced because of all the right wing commentators who host evening talk shows.

Much as the New York Times is viewed by many on the right as leaning left because of its editorial stance.

It's hard, sometimes, for the consumers of news to separate between news content and commentary.

Sometimes, the lines are blurred. As in the case of MSNBC. Which has pulled Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews from live political coverage because they offered their opinions too often on the air.

This is a huge demotion for two anchors who have such high visibility on the network.

Much of the pressure to pull the duo came from the outside. But some came from within the network itself.

Even NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw expressed his concerns that the duo interjected their political beliefs a bit too much.

This has been a recurring theme on talk shows that cater to audiences who are often distrustful of the mainstream media's coverage of politics.

Mike Horn, host of the PM Show on CRN Digital Talk Radio which appears on Paltalk.com as well has, for example, offered ample criticism of both Olbermann and Matthews commentary, which he believes is an attempt to sway voters to support Barack Obama.

Not everyone, however, believes this is such a great move for MSNBC. Glenn Greenwald, writing for Salon.com, argues that Olbermann attracts more viewers than any other on air personality at the struggling cable news network.

The other night, during the Democrat National Convention, I gasped as I heard a NEWS COMMENTATOR for CNN say: "The president is an idiot."

and people wonder why CNN isn't trusted? Disagree with the president, ok. But it shows a total lack of decency to call a president an idiot.

Obermann has lost all credibility as a journalist and MSNBC has lost all credibility with its Inaugural show of Rachel Maddow. No one takes this channel seriously any more. There is absolutely no balance. Obermann should go back to being a second rate sportscaster, this job is not for him.
