Ailing Auto Industry Topic On Paltalk

DETROIT - General Motors and Chrysler have taken federal bailout money but GM may still have to declare bankruptcy.

Ford Motor Company has just renegotiated a contract with the UAW that freezes salaries.

Auto suppliers are in danger of going under, and if they do, the assembly lines will grind to a halt for lack of parts.

And President Obama's auto industry task force has just hired New York bankruptcy attorney Matthew Feldman to give advice on its options in dealing with the ailing industry.

Meanwhile, longtime Big Three employees here are wondering how long they'll be bringing in a paycheck. And the southeast Michigan region, already reeling under horrendous economic conditions, braces itself for more bad news.

Joining us to put this all into perspective on News Talk Online on on Tuesday March 17 will be Detroit Free Press auto critic Mark Phelan.

Phelan has covered the auto industry around the world for nearly two decades. He was founding editor and editor-in-chief of Automotive Business International Magazine in Germany. He has also written for the New York Times, Road and Track Magazine, Ward's Communications and Automotive Industries Magazine.
