Update: Pressure On Karzai Over Marital Rape Law

Earlier today I raised the issue of the deaf response to a new Afghan law which would take rights away from women, including forcing them to have sex with their husbands on demand.

The good news is that President Obama and NATO are putting pressure on Afghan President Hamid Karzai to reverse the law. And Karzai is now saying that he is reviewing the new law.

This is not only, obviously, good news but it's also shows that putting international pressure on human rights violators can have positive outcomes.

i am very happy to see President Obama and NATO apply pressure. I would also like to see the womens right groups apply MORE pressure on these topics, not only on a local or state level, also on a international level, if they do please forgive me..i have not seen any to date! this law is totally backwards and INHUMANE! and it must be stopped ..and one more thought where is the human rights council of the UN? hmmm ya thought so...

The US should start buying the Afghan opium crop for pharmaceutical use. Then, even after troop withdrawal, any regression towards gender apartheid could be met with stiff tariffs, and consequent loss of revenue for the Afghan government.
