Economy Down, Alcohol Consumption Up
A new study confirms what we already knew from personal observation. Alcohol consumption has been up ever since the economy went bad.
It's known as self medication. People are concerned about their economic futures. So they are drinking more. Even higher levels of alcohol use are recorded among those who are unemployed.
But experts say those who turn to the bottle to drown out their gloomy feelings are doing the wrong thing because alcohol is a depressant. Perhaps those who are down over the economy should be trying chocolate instead.
