New Indications That Caffeine Keeps You Alert And Even Safe

Let me start by saying that the research that was conducted that supports the headline of this piece was pretty extreme.

Researchers found that if you deprive someone from any sleep for three days but keep them pumped up on caffeine they will not take risks that one might usually take when he or she hasn't had sleep for such a long period of time.

Let's face it. None of us - unless we are terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, are likely to be deprived of sleep for 72 straight hours. And if we are - I'm not thinking that our "hosts" are going to keep us nice and alert with a cup of Joe every few hours.

But I guess we can look at this at scientific evidence that supports what we do already. Not enough sleep last night? Grab a cup of coffee on the way to work. On a long haul road trip? Stop every couple of hours to stretch and buy a cup for the road.

The research is being presented today at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.
