Bailing Out Minority Broadcasters Not Good Public Policy

Minority broadcasters are asking the federal government to grant them emergency bailout money because they are struggling in this recession.

While I see the need for and support minority broadcasting in the United States, using federal funds to keep them on the air is an inappropriate use of taxpayer's money.

I have the same objection to using money taken from our paychecks to bailout ailing newspapers. Yes, the newspapers serve their communities. But it's not a good idea to allow the federal government to have a say or influence media companies, whether print or broadcast.

We need media that are free from government interference. Comfortable in questioning and challenging decisions that are made by our representatives. Not beholden to them.

I want minority broadcasters to succeed. But not because of some kind of government largess.
