7 Cuban Doctors Detained In Venezuela, Prevented From Traveling To The United States

The Cuban rights group Cuba Archive says seven Cuban doctors were detained by Venezuelan authorities at Caracas (Maquetía) Airport and have been prevented from boarding a flight to Miami.

Reportedly, all seven held visas to enter the United States granted under the Cuban Medical Professional Parole Program. It was reported that their passports have been seized and they were being transferred to Immigration Headquarters in Caracas. Colleagues recently arrived in the United States fear they will all be deported to Cuba, where they will face reprisals.

Over 2,000 Cuban health professionals deserted worldwide and obtained visas for the United States from 2006 to 2009. At least 500 doctors have escaped in Venezuela in recent years, Cuba Archive says.
