The Associated Press is reporting that Republican Scott Brown has won the Massachusetts U.S. Senate seat held by the late Democrat Ted Kennedy for over 50 years.
The win gives the Republicans enough votes to force a filibuster - and - perhaps - derail the health reform legislation Kennedy worked so hard for before he died.
It's possible a bill that reconciles the differences between the House and Senate versions can be pushed through, however, before the election is certified and Brown takes office. But the win signals an even bigger possible shift in national politics. It gives the Republican Party momentum moving into the midterm congressional elections.
