Haitians In U.S. Granted Permission To Stay

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has granted Haitians in the United States temporary protected status - meaning that they are free to overstay their visas during the emergency in their homeland.

The designation allows them to remain in the United States to live and work for the next 18 months. Napolitano says it's part of the department's ongoing efforts to assist Haiti following the devastating earthquake there.

"Providing a temporary refuge for Haitian nationals who are currently in the United States and whose personal safety would be endangered by returning to Haiti is part of this administration's continuing efforts to support Haiti's recovery," she said.
