Danger on the streets of New Jersey
By GARY BAUMGARTEN
Dean McDermott, owner of State News Service in New Jersey, patrols the streets of the Garden State at night looking for breaking news to videotape for TV stations, networks and newspaper web sites.
He's been doing it for decades, but, lately, the streets have become more violent than ever before. And he feels that, since he works alone, he should be able to carry a gun for personal protection. But it seems in New Jersey, at night, in the toughest neighborhoods, the only people carrying guns are the cops and the criminals.
We caught up with McDermott at an after-midnight shooting on Main Street in Orange, NJ, just around the corner from the city's Police Headquarters.
