GWB CLOSING CAUSES MASSIVE TRAFFIC JAMS OFF THE FREEWAY, TOO

Of course when you close three lanes of the upper deck of the George Washington Bridge in both directions it's going to cause for horrendous traffic jams on the New Jersey Turnpike and the Cross Bronx Expressway. But it also screws up travel in Washington Heights. Where residents say they can't depend on the bus because traffic always gridlocks. It also forces semi-trucks into their neighborhoods - and they can't get across intersections when the lights turn green - so they end up blocking the box. One guy I interviewed for 1010 WINS works for a transportation company. He says his drivers are losing money because they get stuck in traffic and the fares give up waiting for them. And Sam, who works at the Shell station, says, invariably, people run out of gas as their cars idle on the congested streets.
