New York cops shoot, kill man in the East Village
Police Chief James O'Neill says detectives from the Morningside Heights secton of Manhattan went to an address on E. 6th Street in the East Village to arrest a man wanted for a robbery on Thursday. When they confronted him, he says, he ran out a sixth floor fire escape - then back into the building.
The cops caught up with him on the first floor where a "violent struggle" ensued. O'Neill says it wasn't until he grabbed one of the detectives' walkie talkie and began beating him over the head with it that one of the officers opened fire fatally striking the suspect.
The cops were taken to the hospital too, for their injuries.
I'm covering the story for 1010 WINS.
