Say what must be said to get elected, do what must be done to suckle at the public teat as long as possible.

There will be no real change without bloodshed and tens of millions of angry people rioting in the street. I don't want that to be true, but I'm more convinced every day that it is.

Sorry.

Lonnie LazarAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4294294294975883770.post-83217789152430805272009-08-03T12:55:38.827-04:002009-08-03T12:55:38.827-04:00Are you putting me on? How about if we pull the plug on TARP and the pork train that Obama loaded up after he was inaugurated and get ALL of our servicemen and women back from our global military empire -- oops! Sorry, kids, we can't afford it any more!

Follow that up with massive taxes on corporations that offshore manufacturing jobs yet still sell their crap in the USA. He said "No new taxes" and then raised them and we voted him out as fast as possible. So bring it on.
Why would Geithner be honest about anything? He didn't even pay his own taxes and then got rewarded with a cushy job.

Deborah YoungAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4294294294975883770.post-35333830914146002422009-08-03T12:54:08.326-04:002009-08-03T12:54:08.326-04:00What they said was, "it's not off the tab...What they said was, "it's not off the table". They say the same thing about nuking Iran. "All options are on the table". While they probably will end up raising them, and this will be his waterloo, what's a person to do? If he comes out, and say's he's going to raise taxes, the bill is dead in the water, period. It's politics, plain and simple. Do people really want universal health care?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4294294294975883770.post-42584865932805748182009-08-03T10:33:51.040-04:002009-08-03T10:33:51.040-04:00"But, for once, I'd like the folks in Was..."But, for once, I'd like the folks in Washington to be forthright with the American people about the costs."

Yeah, and wouldn't it be nice if there really was a Santa Claus? Your prediction could well turn out to be true, but I'd find it more palatable if Washington first tries raising the tax rate of the rich and closing corporate loop holes on foreign earnings. If a tax hike is still needed after that, then so be it.

Surely Obama, who seems to be a student of political history, hasn't forgotten the consequences of Bush Sr.'s infamous "read my lips" fiasco.

james poynerAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4294294294975883770.post-63815458820434919432009-08-03T09:57:08.386-04:002009-08-03T09:57:08.386-04:00I guess breaking campaign promises is nothing new,...I guess breaking campaign promises is nothing new, but Obama is raising the practice to an art form.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4294294294975883770.post-81408086469585961222009-08-03T09:56:18.707-04:002009-08-03T09:56:18.707-04:00You are asking a lot from a group of people whose ...You are asking a lot from a group of people whose only goal in life is to get re-elected.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4294294294975883770.post-75773295881217209492009-08-03T09:16:26.043-04:002009-08-03T09:16:26.043-04:00Now, I'm no economist......... but....... if y...Now, I'm no economist......... but....... if you have a huge economical problem that causes you to borrow trillions of dollars, and you have a whole raft of bills and reforms you want to implement as President would it not seem logical that you would have to raise money from somewhere? Where does Government get its money from? We the people!! Direct and indirect taxation is the major source of revenue that flows into the Government coffers. Governments do not MAKE money, they SPEND our money! As the major funders of the Government don't we, the people, rate?
Obviously since the major source of revenue is from taxation it is equally logical that to counter the 2 aforementioned issues that gobble money they would have to raise more money through more taxation! Simple? Well it should be simple. However, a candidate in the run up to the election who was saying that raising taxes was not broadly on the agenda was either naive, or deceitful. You have to make your own minds up as to which this was. BUT - be prepared to have less in your pay packet if you are a hard working person - higher taxation is coming to a Government office near YOU!!!
Wouldn't it have been easier to say to the public - look, this country is in an economic crisis, in order to get out of it we are going to have to make sacrifices. We have to put up with less now in order to secure the future for us, our children, and our children's children. Now THAT would have been an honest politician!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4294294294975883770.post-52261150213962387702009-08-03T08:48:28.630-04:002009-08-03T08:48:28.630-04:00It would be nice to have a job, and have taxes to ...It would be nice to have a job, and have taxes to pay. With 600,000people still losing jobs each month, I'd hope the top priority is getting people back to work, and that will happen faster wit ha true bipartisan effort from Congress.
