I swear guilt was written all over my face. I was paranoid that at any time I would be called to the carpet because of course, parents have eyes in the back of their heads. It was the worse feeling I put myself through and this would be the same case scenario. Hiding a pack of smokes to a 14 year old is like trying to hide 330,000 to an adult. The guilt and paranoia of getting caught just isn't worth it. And feel that for the rest of your life too? When his caregivers (if I remember correctly, he was living with his grandparents) counted the money, the amount was tens of thousands of dollars.

They called the authorities who arrived, quickly seized the money and announced it was all counterfeit and the kid did the right thing. And the boy's reward for ostensibly saving the treasury the problems and costs associated with such a large amount of money, more than a few years worth of earnings for his family? Agents presented him a $50 savings bond.

Now, it's pretty clear the authorities were going to announce the money was counterfeit just in case this poor family secreted portions away for later use. They wanted to dissuade them from using it.

But I have to wonder if the implicit message behind this would have been that the impoverished are better rewarded by not cooperating with authorities.

Would I keep the money found in your scenario? I would certainly have notions to do so. I'm in the lowest percentile of earners in this nation, bringing in far below the poverty line.

But knowing what I do about the world, that money in the bag from the truck wouldn't just be from a nameless, faceless corporation, the kind that rob the federal coffers with bailouts to cover their shoddy and self-serving business practices, that taint and rig our political system and society. No, they would find a way to pass the loss down the line to average folks, then find a way to recoup the loss through federal insurance so they end up better off on both ends.

Then, there's the fact they would likely catch me and I would go to prison.

Not only would I not take the bag, but I would get as far away from the scene as quickly as I could.

Kevin LeeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4294294294975883770.post-2897121354268201762009-06-02T13:56:09.906-04:002009-06-02T13:56:09.906-04:00well i never give the money back but i would try t...well i never give the money back but i would try to spend that on the poor and helpless people in every way by opening a charity trust for themmaiddy78_1noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4294294294975883770.post-67599681352743978262009-06-02T13:51:05.528-04:002009-06-02T13:51:05.528-04:00A passbook or wallet or purse? If you found a large sum of money and did not know the source, the legal procedure is turn in the money to the authorities. If no one claims it within (depending on the state) a certain amount of time the money is yours.

If you find 20 bucks blowing down the street with no owner chasing it. You could turn it into the police and wait, but really is someone going to contact the police because they lost 20 bucks? I would keep it in that case and buy a round of coffee for the group down at Starbucks.

One time I found a savings passbook with ID in the parking lot. There was over 17 thousand dollars in it. I drove across the street to the bank and gave it to the teller, the thought of trying to steal the money never entered my mind.
